Volkswagen Golf 1.4i Stage 1 Remap
On Volkswagen Golf 1.4i naturally aspirated engines a Stage 1 remap refines the ignition timing, fuelling and throttle response maps. Without a turbo the power gain is smaller than on turbocharged engines; the difference is felt mostly in throttle response and the mid-range. No hardware is changed and the original software is backed up.
It depends on the generation and the stock output. 1.4i engines with 75–80 bhp reach 82–90 bhp with a Stage 1 remap; the largest gain is +10 bhp (Golf 6 1.4i 16v 80hp). Pick your version in the table below.
Volkswagen Golf 1.4i: Stage 1 figures by generation and year
Year / chassis: Golf 6 - 2009 - 2012
| Engine | Power | Torque | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Golf 1.4i 16v 80hp | 80 → 90 bhp | 132 → 145 Nm | +10 bhp |
Year / chassis: Golf 5 - 2003 - 2008
| Engine | Power | Torque | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Golf 1.4i 16v 75hp | 75 → 82 bhp | 126 → 140 Nm | +7 bhp |

About the naturally aspirated petrol engine
This vehicle uses a naturally aspirated petrol engine, without a turbo or supercharger. The amount of air it can draw in is physically limited; power depends mainly on displacement, revs and the intake and exhaust design.
How a Stage 1 remap works on the Volkswagen Golf 1.4i
On naturally aspirated engines the gain from a Stage 1 remap is limited compared with turbo engines. Ignition timing, fuel maps, throttle response and, where useful, the rev limit are optimised for a livelier response and a smoother power curve. Bigger gains need hardware changes such as intake, exhaust or camshafts.
Pre-remap checklist
- Spark plugs, coils and fuel quality.
- Air filter, throttle body and intake leaks.
- Lambda probe and catalytic converter condition.
- Engine compression and oil consumption (at high mileage).
Expectations on naturally aspirated engines should be realistic; catalogue figures are a typical range.
This section is based on GP Power ECU workshop experience; the power and torque figures come from the catalogue measurement above.
