Mazda MX-5 2.0 SkyActiv-G Stage 1 Remap
On Mazda MX-5 2.0 SkyActiv-G naturally aspirated engines a Stage 1 remap refines the ignition timing, fuelling and throttle response maps. Without a turbo the power gain is smaller than on turbocharged engines; the difference is felt mostly in throttle response and the mid-range. No hardware is changed and the original software is backed up.
It depends on the generation and the stock output. 2.0 SkyActiv-G engines with 160–184 bhp reach 175–202 bhp with a Stage 1 remap; the largest gain is +18 bhp (2.0 SkyActiv-G 184hp). Pick your version in the table below.
Mazda MX-5 2.0 SkyActiv-G: Stage 1 figures by generation and year
Year / chassis: 2015+
| Engine | Power | Torque | Gain |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda MX-5 2.0 SkyActiv-G 160hp | 160 → 175 bhp | 200 → 220 Nm | +15 bhp |
| Mazda MX-5 2.0 SkyActiv-G 184hp | 184 → 202 bhp | 205 → 217 Nm | +18 bhp |

About the naturally aspirated petrol engine
This vehicle uses a naturally aspirated petrol engine, without a turbo or supercharger. The amount of air it can draw in is physically limited; power depends mainly on displacement, revs and the intake and exhaust design.
How a Stage 1 remap works on the Mazda MX-5 2.0 SkyActiv-G
On naturally aspirated engines the gain from a Stage 1 remap is limited compared with turbo engines. Ignition timing, fuel maps, throttle response and, where useful, the rev limit are optimised for a livelier response and a smoother power curve. Bigger gains need hardware changes such as intake, exhaust or camshafts.
Pre-remap checklist
- Spark plugs, coils and fuel quality.
- Air filter, throttle body and intake leaks.
- Lambda probe and catalytic converter condition.
- Engine compression and oil consumption (at high mileage).
Expectations on naturally aspirated engines should be realistic; catalogue figures are a typical range.
This section is based on GP Power ECU workshop experience; the power and torque figures come from the catalogue measurement above.
